Graphic design

Tom B, Serco

Sorry for the long scroll! I thought it was important to demonstrate how much visual art and graphic design I do. I sometimes undersell myself and I didn’t want to do that here. I’ve worked on and designed logos, branding assets, reports, websites and complete visual identities, all from the ground up. I’ve also worked within established branding frameworks and created new assets and collateral within them. I’ve made flyers for electronics companies in the Midlands, updated the logo for a tour guide in Morocco, directed the art for a record label’s release schedule in London, designed reports for social enterprises in the North and drawn and published branding systems and guidelines from scratch. I’ve done all of the bits in between, too.

VISUAL IDENTITY FROM SCRATCH

This is usually a pleasure to do, but it can take some time. Creating a look from nothing is difficult, even for experienced designers and to hone in on what you like, it often means eliminating things that you don’t (that means a lot of good old fashioned talking, usually). Clear communications, empathy, moodboards and constructive feedback are all methods I employ to get at what it is you need and want for your work.

BRIGHTENING & REINVENTING

Being inventive with established branding is important and its a fun thing to do. We can work with your metrics, with your principles, with your imagery and brand guidelines or we can go way out into left-field with some wilder ideas. This is comfort zone stuff for me, really and I like to subvert things.

DESIGN WITH AN ARTISTIC STREAK

I love putting a hand-drawn and painterly spin onto whatever I can. Inspiration will find you working as the saying goes and when you’re drawing a face, painting a seahorse or learning to sketch in perspective, ideas will often come to you quite quickly.

I’m particularly drawn to nature and to natural forms and geometries. Linework and colour have served me well in the past and if you go and take a look at some old work, you’ll find an abundance of painterly approaches to visuals and visual identities too (even in report design!). More than anything though, I love to play. Its a tried and tested way to make something original and you’d be surprised at how seemingly silly ideas can be useful or good jumping off points for something great. If you’re excited about making new stuff or subverting something that already exists (for example established branding) then I think we’ll enjoy working together.

ILLUSTRATION

Illustration work is always a pleasure to produce. I’ve illustrated books in the past and I’d love to do more. Digital art is already priced in in most cases (its usually a part of the design service to me) so more often than not, there won’t be any extra charge for drawings, paintings, line art, technical drawings and data visualisation. Obviously, if you want 207 technical drawings of floorboard fixings, partition load diagrams and a graph to make each chapter sing – rather than 8 starfish paintings – there may be an extra charge. Just ask if you’re not sure.

I also produce my own work in my own time (go and have a look on www.between6and16miles.co.uk to see what I get up to with that project and to buy art prints), printed by local printers on high quality paper stock here in Sheffield. If you want a print of anything from A5 up to A2 (and maybe even A1), please do let me know and I’ll see what I can do for you.

DESIGNING REPORTS & BIG DOCUMENTS

I can put together small and large reports. We can make them as creative, functional and concise as you like and the illustrations – should you need them – come as part of the service. If you want to see some older work and visuals, head to Instagram.

Need a quote for a funder? Feel free to ask for a quote for a funding body. It can be itemised and supplied as designed PDF.

I can manage the printing and binding for you and if you have a preferred printer, then we can work with them. Should you need me to, I can find you a suitable alternative or replacement.

“Do you do flyers and posters?”

Yes.

Can you design and illustrate a book, an album, a report or a big document from start to finish?

Yes.

“Can you animate your art and make it move?”

Yes.

“Do you have special offers for DJs, labels and producers in the world of deep house?”

Yes.

“How can I contact you?”

You can email me here.

“Who else have you worked for?”

“Are you based in Sheffield?”

Yes.

“Can you animate one of my drawings?”

No, it must be one of mine.

“Are you a fell-runner?”

Yes. I’ll thrash you on a Peak District 20k any time.

“Can I buy your work anywhere?”

Yes. Head to www.between6and16miles.co.uk.

“Will you manage the print run for me?”

Yes, with pleasure. Printers often have specs that designers need to know about.

“Do you think this daft marginalia ploy is big and clever?”

It’s useful more than clever, I think. For example, it often tells me who reads my site and who doesn’t. I prefer things that are useful over things that are clever for the sake of it.

“How can I contact you?”
